The Ryder Cup 2023 Tournament was held on Monday 6th and Wednesday 8th November with President’s Team taking on the Captain’s Team, led by Steve Cullen and Roger Kemp respectively. The format for the first round on Monday was four-ball-better-ball match play and the second round singles match play.
On Day 1, after a number of very close encounters, the Captain’s team took a narrow 4-3 lead leaving the match very finely balanced going into the second day’s singles round.
In the first group on the second day, the Captain and the President both won their individual matches but then the Captain’s team won all of the next 4 matches, extending their lead to 9-4.
Having won only one of the five 6 matches completed and with the Captain’s team only requiring 2 wins from the remaining 8 matches, the chances of victory for the President’s team were looking very slim.
The President trying to enjoy a Guinness whilst recalling last year’s tournament when, in a very similar position, his team went on to claim 91/2 points from the last 10 matches to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and hoping for another remarkable comeback.
And, amazingly, it came to pass! The President’s men and ladies won every single one of the remaining 8 matches to be crowned the 2023 Ryder Cup Winners by a final score of 12-9.
All the players then retired to the El Olivo restaurant to enjoy a nice meal and drinks after which the Captain presented the magnificent trophy to the President and congratulated both teams for a match played in good spirit. A delighted President thanked his team for their outstanding efforts and thanked the club’s Management & Staff for all their support and their customary excellent service both days.
