Monty’s Corner – “News from the Golf Course” October 2024

Hello everyone!

As I am writing this, looking out of my office window, it is pouring down with rain. As you all know, we have been under severe water restrictions, and this is such a positive change because we need it.

Myself, our head greenkeeper Pepe and assistant greenkeeper Javi fortunately anticipated the weather so we put chemicals on the tees and fairways to help expedite the growth of the grass with all of the moisture. This should “green” things up and make the grass stronger and help knit together, and also repair many of the divots.

We have been very busy at the club, averaging almost 170 players per day, and the marshals are doing a great job looking after the golf course and moving the tees accordingly. We are repairing the damage the wild boars are causing on a daily basis, and as they are still a protected species in Marbella, this is all we can do at the moment. The new fence we installed on the back nine has worked tremendously but with all the construction being undertaken in the Santa Clara urbanisation pushing the animals out, they are now coming in from holes two and three. We are doing our best and I thank you all for your patience, and let’s hope that this rain will keep them in the mountains.

I will continue to keep the fairways at a decent length and the rough just a little higher. We are hand cutting the greens every day and this has helped with the condition and making the ball roll smoother as well. I will continue to keep the greens at a good speed as they are at 9.9/10.0 on the stimpmeter every day.

We are now a club with 204 members, and I would like to thank the committee for welcoming all new members and helping create a wonderful atmosphere on the club terrace. I have played at all the golf clubs here on the coast and I can tell you that we have a great ambiance here at MGCC from all members and staff, and this is why our reputation is so good, and why so many people are interested in joining a golf club with such positive members and great staff. Thank you all for making MGCC one of the best clubs on the coast!

October and November are busy months as regards to members events – last Friday the Captain’s Day Tournament was played and the next tournaments coming up are the Ryder Cup Tournament on November 4th and 6th and the Autumn Scramble on November 22nd. Please mark your calendars and sign up well in advance to secure your spot.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the new members’ committee, which was elected at the AGM last Wednesday, October 16th. It will be a pleasure to work this year with Jan Zadruzynski (newly elected Captain), Steve Cullen (President) and Brian St. John as well as the new additions to the committee, Cristina Fernández (Ladies Interclub Captain) and Joe McKelvey (Vice-Captain). You can see their group and individual photos on the Members Area of our website, if you don’t already happen to know them in person.

The Christmas Lunch on December 25th is filling up quickly, so if you haven’t made your booking yet, please contact our F&B Manager Francesc to make your reservation. We also offer special festive business menus for groups of 25 people or more, that provide a great opportunity for companies to enjoy a private celebration with their staff during the holiday season. You can see further details of these menus on the relevant section of this newsletter. Our restaurant menu also changed last week for the autumn season, and we have included some lovely new dishes that you don’t want to miss. Try our Puff Chicken Pastry, Veal Entrecote Steak or the Seasonal Salad on your next visit!

Thank you all again for your continued support. My door is always open, so if any of you have any questions or would like to have a coffee with me, please pop in.

See you all around the club.
