Hello ladies and gentlemen! I hope this newsletter finds you all well.
I will begin my article with a summary of the maintenance to the golf course we performed during the week of May 29th to June 4th. We performed a process called hollow tining on all greens and tee boxes. We have a machine that inserts a metal rod into the green removing a core of turf. The holes left in the greens are usually around 11mm – 14mm wide. Once the entire green/tee box has been hollow tined, the greenkeepers drag off the chunks of turf and top dress it with some sand and fertiliser. We top dress the greens twice because of the extreme heat expected during the summer.
And why do we carry out this process? The concentrated traffic on the putting surfaces during high season causes the ground to become compacted and hardened. In turn, this leads to poor drainage and less oxygen for the roots of the grass. Hollow tining is the best way to treat this. Punching holes in the green allows the turf to expand, receive more oxygen, and more easily absorb moisture. In other words, make the greens softer and more receptive while enhancing the growth of the roots.
We also completed many other projects as well during the closure week. Please be sure to have a good look at the pro-shop when you are next at the club, we have made several enhancements to the lighting, decorating, and the display of the products.
In addition, tables and chairs on the small terrace of the restaurant have been sanded and painted as well as a new awning installed.
This summer is going to be a hot one, so please have a look at the restaurant part of this newsletter as we will implement some new fresh dishes to the menu for the summer starting July 1st 2023. You can also see the completely new menu attached to this newsletter. Remember, if any of you have friends or family members in town and you would like to have a meal with excellent service on our terrace with great views, please send Francesc an email or speak with him and we can reserve a table for you.
I am very proud to announce that we have the most members at MGCC as we have ever had in the history of the club. At the time of writing this article, we have a total of 166 members! Please give a warm welcome to all the new members and we hope to see them playing in the Monday – Wednesday – Friday weekly competitions and join us for other event days as well. In this newsletter you can see the names of all the new members and please also remember to check which members have birthdays coming up or have just had a birthday celebration recently.
Last but not least, starting the second week of July 2023 we will be changing the members tee time bookings and sign up to the weekly competition as well as to any event to be done online through Clapphouse app, which will connect with our tee sheet for the tee time bookings and with GolfDirecto for the competition signup and management. GolfDirecto will allow Live Scoring, which is a very exciting new feature for our members and during your round of golf you will be able to see how the other members are playing. All scores will be introduced on GolfDirecto, while you play, and the results of the competition are instantly available after everyone has finished their round. Clapphouse app will also allow digital tokens for the driving range to be purchased through the app and then you only need to have your smartphone with you to get your range balls instead of carrying tokens. We will be sending you all the information of how this works along with your personal access codes later this month and in early July. We will also be inviting you all to an informative introduction to the new app at the golf club, which will be one of several meetings done during summer and early autumn.
Thank you all for your cooperation during the greens’ maintenance and hope to see you all soon at the golf club.
Have a wonderful summer!
