Summer is fast approaching and there is some great news! The ladies’ membership at MGCC is thriving and we now have over 40 ladies enjoying playing the course and relaxing in the clubhouse and terrace. The increase in numbers has made a big difference in selecting teams for all of our interclub competitions, as, for the first time, we are truly able to select the players as opposed to searching for ladies to play.
Since the last newsletter, we have played our remaining two Ladies Interclub fixtures. The first was away at Los Arqueros. We were taking a narrow home fixture lead into the return match but just missed out on an overall win. Eliis Naro and Chrissie Wills made their MGCC debuts and played brilliantly.
Then we had our return home fixture against El Chaparral. This home/away fixture carries an annual trophy, which MGCC won back last year, and we were keen to retain it. Having lost each pairing away at El Chaparral, it looked like we would need a miracle. But, never underestimate our Ladies when they wear the club shirt: we won each pairing and drew overall, which meant that we retained the trophy. Well Done, Girls!
Very soon, the Summer Mixed Interclub fixtures begin. MGCC won the league last year and we are ready again to take part in matches against Santa Maria, El Paraiso, El Chaparral, La Cala and Atalaya. Wish us luck!
As we head deeper into the summer, don’t forget that The Solheim Cup is fast approaching and tickets are still available. Some of our ladies have been accepted as Volunteers e.g. Julie Owen and Sheelagh Maloney, who will be responsible for looking after disabled guests. Catherine Shiels is MGCC Ambassador and is very busy at the moment, as part of a fantastic team of organizers. Details of how to buy your tickets can be found at www.solheimcup2023.eu.
