On Wednesday the 13th July 2016 our young member, Charlie Smith, made the first hole in one of his life on hole number 3, when playing in the Members Weekly competition. We took the opportunity to interview him a few days later:
– How long have you been living in Spain and a member of Marbella Golf Country Club?
I’ve been in Spain for 7 months and started as a member of Marbella Golf in January 2016.
– Why did you move to Spain?
I’m hoping to improve my golf and get a scholarship to go to study in a university in the United States.
– How old are you now and since when have you been playing golf?
I turned 17 in May and I’ve been playing golf since I was 11 years of age. That was when I participated in my first tournament.
– What are you planning on going to study in the US?
I would like to study Sales and Marketing with a golf scholarship.
– I understand our Golf Professional, Monty Bordelon, is helping you out with this dream, right?
Yes, he’s helped me to bring my handicap down 4 shots since I’ve been here. I play off handicap 6 now, but I need to get down to almost 0 before going to US. I have 2 years to accomplish this.
– I heard you did your first Hole in One this Wednesday. How did you feel?
To be honest I didn’t know what to think. I couldn’t believe the ball went in. And afterwards I could only think on the bar bill I was going to have to pay inviting all the members to a round of drinks.
– Having been a member of Marbella Golf CC for some time now and having played the course several times, what is the part of the course you like the most?
My preferred part of the course is the back 9 holes. Hole number 8 has great views and I like it a lot too, although I don’t tend to play that hole too well.
– Do you have any sponsors or other people that help you out achieving your goal?
My parents of course, as they’ve moved country for me so that I can practice all year round. Darren Cleveland from Blue Sky Golf Rental has helped me out too with the golf equipment.
Congratulations Charlie for your Hole in One! We wish you all the best for the coming years and keep it going the same way as now!
