I am delighted and proud to announce that, on 26th August, the Marbella Golf Country Club team was crowned Summer Mixed Interclub League champions.
Going into August, we had a comfortable lead in the league table with 2 rounds to play.
The first of these was at El Paraiso on 12th August. In a very close contest where 5 of the 6 teams were separated by only 6 Stableford points from 4 counting cards, we earned 3 points on the day taking us to the brink of the title. Going into the last event, we needed 2 points to be assured of winning the championship.
The final round on 26th August at La Cala turned out to be difficult day for us on the course and we claimed only 1 point. This meant that if Atalaya came in first place and took 6 points on the day, they would finish on the same total league points as us. The decision on the tie-break in such circumstances would have meant Atalaya being crowned champions. After an anxious wait, the scores were announced and Atalaya gained 5 points, leaving us 1 point clear at the top of the standings! It was a huge relief and, as I am sure you can imagine, we all enjoyed a celebratory drink.
I must say a big ‘thank you’ and congratulations to all the Marbella members who turned out for the team; namely Francine O’Neill, Anita Cullen, Petra Lauk, Sheelagh Maloney, Julie Owen, Maxine Hobson, Sue McDonough, Kiki Bach, Vlada Alexeeva, Vivien Pavis, Angeles Ramirez, Roger Kemp, Les McGlasson, Jess Meakin, Gary O’Neill, Jan Zad, John Radcliffe, John Lewis, David Wadmore, Martin Ingham and Ray Norris. This was not won on the final day but by a superb effort from all involved over the course of the whole season. A very happy and proud Captain has brought the Trophy back home to our club!
After an otherwise very quiet July and August at the club, we are very much looking forward to seeing members returning to Marbella in September/October after the long summer break. We have missed you all.
