Captain’s Corner, June 2023

Our Captain, Les McGlasson, has again had to go to the UK to attend to some important issues and, unfortunately for our readers, I am continuing as guest writer of Captain’s Corner.

On 10th May, we had an excellent turn out for our Annual President’s Cup event – I would like to thank everyone who attended for making it a wonderful day. In the golf tournament, Eddie Ball claimed the President’s Cup as well as the category B prize. Eddie, after having a disastrous start having scored just 1 point on the first 3 holes, proceeded to play probably some of the best golf he has played in many years to finish with the overall best score of 40 points. Runner-up was Eduardo Tubio Olivera and Anneke Samways 3rd.

Maciek Luczak, won the Category A prize with a superb round of level par gross with Sheelagh Maloney in 2nd place and Les McGlasson 3rd. Paul Judson won the Guest Prize and Nearest-the-Pin winners were Noel Keating and Anneke Samways. Congratulations to all the winners and many thanks to all the club’s Management and Staff for all their support in helping to make this a special day and, in particular, providing high quality service and an excellent meal. Thanks also to Ricky Lavazza for again providing great entertainment.

Also, in May, the Men’s Interclub played home and away games against Cerrado del Aguila and emerged victors by the narrowest of margins. Men’s interclub matches will resume in the autumn.

Since then, we have had an unusual amount of rain and it has disrupted golf to some extent. Nevertheless, after an extremely long dry spell, it has to be said that the rains have been a blessing for this part of the world, especially for our reservoirs – and for our course.

The Summer Mixed Interclub League commences in June and concludes in late August and we are looking forward to putting up a strong defence of our Champions title.

We are looking also forward to testing soon the new Mobile Application that will enable instant tee-time bookings, registration for competitions and events, In-App live scoring for individual players as well as providing tournament live leader-boards. We recognise that we will need to provide guidance to members on how to use this App and we will prepare an education/training plan once we have completed the pilot.

At the time of writing, the golf world is trying to assimilate the news of the sudden merger of the USPGA/DP World Tour with the 12-months old break-away “LIV” tour.

The unexpected coming together of the two rival factions potentially puts the ownership of professional golf in the hands of an arm of the Saudi Government. Since LIV came into existence last year it has split the ranks in the professional game as well as divided opinion among golf fans. I think we can expect an interesting time ahead, especially in the 3 months running up to the Ryder Cup – and it remains to be seen if the wounds created over the past year can be healed.

I would like to wish a happy summer with your families and friends to all of our members who have travelled back to their homelands for the months June to September – and we look forward to seeing you back in Marbella
