Captain’s Corner – February 2026 News

Welcome to the first Captains corner of 2026,

As I am sure you have noticed we have had a remarkably wet and windy start to the new year. In fact, we have experienced weather conditions not seen on the Costa del Sol for many years. The long-term benefits of the now much improved water reserves in Andalucia are fantastic but it is incredible to think that 1 year ago we were facing severe water shortages.

How quickly the tides turn. While many of the members’ competitions have unfortunately been cancelled, we have been quite lucky to be able to play some golf by being flexible and picking up the dry windows to enjoy the course. The weather forecast is improving and before we know it will be back to the usual sunshine on the Costa del Sol.

Costa del Sol Senior League 2026

We have now arranged dates for many of the games which the Higuerón Marbella Golf Resort Men’s team will be playing in this year’s competition. As with last year there will be 9 teams in the 2026 Costa del Sol Seniors league and the first of our matches was played against Azata Golf club in January.

We were extremely fortunate to get both the home and away games played in dry conditions and delighted with the outcome. Azata Golf club were runners up in the competition last year and are fancied to do very well again this year, so it was a tough draw to play them in the first round of matches.

Last year we lost the corresponding fixture 12 – 6. This time it was a different story and although we lost the away game 3 – 6 in a hard-fought contest we had a comfortable 6.5 – 2.5 win at home. So, a great start to this year’s campaign with 9.5 points.

Thanks to the Higuerón Marbella Golf Resort team for their grit and performances captained by Roger Kemp partnered by Tim Barry, Joe Horvath who partnered Tomas Hjelte and Roger Williams who partnered the debutant, Brian Smith. It was a controversial team selection and was greatly rewarding to see that all players contributed to this result.

Singles and Doubles Matchplay competitions 2026

After the incredible success of last year’s tournaments there was great excitement at the club when the draw for this year’s competition was made by the Vice Captain Joe McKelvey and me. This year we had a record number of entrants, and the draw has thrown some great ties.

A few that have caught the eye include the current singles champion and pre-tournament favorite John Collins being drawn against James Robertson, a stern test in John’s defense of his singles title. In the doubles draw the current champions Paul Judson and Paul Weightman face a tricky match against the big outsiders Paul Jones and Grant Evans.

It is great to see that the Clubs Honours boards have been updated to include all last year’s big winners in the club competitions.

As the weather returns to normal so will our Monday, Wednesday and Friday competitions. All members are very welcome to come and join in for friendly and competitive golf at Higueron Marbella Golf Resort, a great way get your handicap down and meet new friends.
