Captain’s Corner – February 2025 News

The Costa del Sol Men’s Seniors Liga for 2025 has begun and I am delighted that Marbella Golf is competing in this competition for the very first time. We will be competing against 8 other established golf clubs; La Cala, Miraflores, La Duquesa, La Cañada, El Candado, Añoreta, Alhaurin and Azata. We play all the teams both home and away, culminating with the last game being played in October this year. This gives us a great opportunity to be involved in a competitive league and visit some new courses that we have never played before. The team consists of 6 players playing in 3 doubles better ball match play games with 1 point gained for a win on the front 9, 1 point for the back 9 and 1 point for the game. Therefore, the maximum points each doubles team can win is 3 and therefore 9 in total for the team.

We played our first game away at La Cañada on the 14th of January 2025. It was a very cold day, and the team performed well considering minimal knowledge of the La Cañada course. The greens were especially fast and despite a valiant effort we narrowly lost 8-1. The return game at Marbella Golf was played on 29th January and home advantage was a telling factor in a marvelous 7-2 win. Special thanks to the team consisting of myself, Steve Cullen, Tomas Hjelte, Gary O’Neill, Paul Judson, Martin Ingham and Joe Horvath.

We next play the reigning champions, Añoreta, in March and the signup sheet for this game is on the members board along with the dates for all the remaining fixtures. This is a good opportunity for members to experience the competition and visit new courses.

The eagerly anticipated draw for the Singles and Doubles match play competition took place at Marbella Golf CC in January, revealing some exciting matches. The competition for 2025 has now started and the competition sheets are on the members board so you can follow the progress and see who is moving through the rounds. Best of luck to everyone taking part in the competition.

Thankfully we have received some decent rainfall during the winter months which is very welcome in the Costa del Sol. The golf course has benefited significantly from this and is in great condition. Membership numbers at Marbella Golf CC are continuing to grow and the members’ competitions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are very well attended, especially Fridays which are played in a team format. Booking in advance is highly recommended to avoid any disappointment.

Finally, a wee reminder that the Spring Scramble is on Friday the 7th March and the Bob Naify Trophy on Friday the 11th April 2025.

Looking forward to seeing you at the club!
