Ryder Cup 2021 was held on Monday 8th and Wednesday 10th November with Ray Norris’s President’s Team taking on Steve Cullen’s Captain’s Team.
On Monday, the Captain’s team took a slender 5-4 lead in the four-ball-better-ball format and the team captains then produced the pairings for the singles matches to be played on Wednesday.
On Wednesday the singles matches commenced with all to play for. The Captains team got off to a very bright start winning 4 of the first 6 matches, but the middle order matches saw the momentum shift towards the President’s team and with just 3 pairs still on the course, the Captain’s team was just clinging on to a 1 point lead.
As with almost all the matches over the two days, those final matches were very close, but ultimately the Captain’s team triumphed in the singles by 9 ½ – 8 ½, making the final score 14 ½ – 12 ½.
Ray said it gave him “great pleasure” to present the magnificent (and very heavy) trophy to Steve, but his expression suggested otherwise! A delighted Steve congratulated both teams for providing a closely fought, exciting contest. After the presentation, everyone enjoyed a meal in the sunshine.
