Michael Campbell must be really proud of James Robinson and James Watts. Both, young and British, have achieved the first and the second position on the 9th Gecko Pro Tour held in Marbella Golf Country Club and Santa Clara Golf Marbella. Michael Campbell is one of the greatest golfers over the last years, a maori warrior dressed up as a golfer and winner of the US Open. So there are many reasons why the Academy of Hotel Villapadierna is called The Michael Campbell Golf Academy. In this Academy is where Robinson and Watts are affiliated and where they normally do the training. No doubt, wherever Michael may be he must be happy with the results in this competition.
Robinson has not only won the competition but also has had a cum laude performance in Marbella Golf Country Club and Santa Clara Golf Marbella, which have presented excellent conditions. His results are from another galaxy. During the three days of competition he shot 197 (-18), 64-65-68. An extraordinary feat which has allowed him to win with the advantage of 7 shots on his Villapadierna partner, Watts. The third has been Gabriel Cañizares, 9 shots below the winner.
The statistics of Robinson are remarkable. Twenty one birdies in three days of competition is something stratospheric. This means one birdie in less than every 3 holes. Robinson redeemed himself from last week, when he started as the leader the last day in La Quinta and he finally surrendered to the Swedish Tobias Rosendhal. “I know I was playing really well and that I could reach the victory. I am very happy. Last week I almost won and this time I preferred not to say anything till I have the trophy in my hands”.
Robinson highlighted the high level presented by both courses and, above all, the conditions of the greens. Furthermore, he recommended all the English people to sign up and play the Gecko Pro Tour in this time of the year when in their country is almost impossible to practice and compete. “It’s a wonderful tour. It is perfectly organised and it is a really interesting test for every professional. For me is an excellent training for the Challenge Tour”.
We can also highlight another name, which is Jason Timmis, good friend of Robinson who beat the record of Santa Clara Golf course on the second day with 61 shots. “It didn’t surprised me, because I know him very well and he has magnificent conditions”, said the winner.
