Pilates Method

A body sculpting and rehabilitation technique designed by German osteopath and fitness expert Joseph Pilates, who further developed this method in the United States around 1926.  It was once used almost exclusively by dancers and athletes in order to recover from injuries, overcome one-sided muscle development, improve body alignment and build up postural strength. The Method is now utilised throughout the world by people of all ages and all fitness levels; every exercise can be modified to meet individual needs.  The Studio offers a wide  of classes, beginners to advanced, body conditioning, sports injury rehabilitation as well as special programs for dancers and athletes.

Client Evaluation

From your initial visit we provide you with a personalised assessment and place you in one of our rehabilitation or body conditioning programs.  Our full range of services include:

  • The Pilates Method implements: alignment, injury prevention, correct breathing, simultaneous stretching and strengthening, harmony between mind and muscle. It is completely non-impact and muscles are never worked to exhaustion. It maintains that magic balance between strength and flexibility, balancing agonist and antagonist forces in the joint
  • Most exercise sessions begin with movements that facilitate the integration of abdominal control and spine articulation with breathing
  • Movement dynamics are in accord with current sports research and practice. We utilise current physiological, kinematics and biomechanical principles of exercise
  • Pilates provides an environment that facilitates correct hip, knee, foot, and ankle tracking
  • The exercises  increase flexibility at the same time that they build strength
  • It is low impact, so a client can recondition from injury in a  non-abusive way
  • The apparatus use resistance springs to strengthen and stretch various muscle groups, allowing for both concentric and eccentric muscle contractions
  • It has a range of resistance that can challenge any body
  • This Method is insightful in that it reveals structural weaknesses in the body very quickly
  • Pilates also suits aging bodies because, without stressing joints, it enhances flexibility, circulation, and muscle mass which in turn fights osteoporosis
