Peter Greaves is a retired Petroleum Engineer. His degree is in geology and he became a Petroleum Engineer during a ten year career with Shell International, which led to him specializing in drilling and completions engineering, in locations such as Brunei, Australia, and Egypt. After Shell he became a consultant, working for a variety of clients in the UK (onshore South of England and the North Sea), Tunisia, Tanzania, South Africa, China, and Pakistan, on both onshore and offshore operations. For five years he lectured on the subject of 'Well Productivity' for BP around the world. He was also in Houston, Texas, for two years, with 'British Borneo', as the Drilling Manager of a deepwater operation, similar to the one that has recently caused BP so many problems. His final five years were spent as a consultant to BP on deepwater drilling operations in the Black Sea and Angola.
A disaster as big as this is not due to one single thing. Peter's talk will be about the operational aspects that led up to the disaster and trying to understand some of the decisions that led to the catastrophic blow-out. He will also discuss some of the well-kill operations. He says that he knows very little about the clean-up operations, but is just very glad that he has nothing to do with it!
